Well the holidays are over
Families are scattered across the state
All the lights are back in boxes
Trees out by the road to face their fate
The night has finally settled
Like dust on this one streelight road
I’m a mile out of Mansfield
Waitin’ for the clouds to unload
There’s a station up ahead
And a lifetime receding in my rear
The stereo keeps spitting out
Some ancient song nobody wants to hear
The heater’s hardly working
But the traffic has finally slowed
Twenty miles out of Mansfield
Waitin’ for the clouds to unload
For every hatchet you bury
You carry a heavier load
Maybe there’s no rhyme or reason
We all grow out of everything one day
Though it kills me to admit it
That place grew out of me the same way
Now the universe is waking
But a sunrise couldn’t shake this kind of cold
300 miles out of Mansfield
Waiting for the clouds to unload

White Lies

Well he fell for her faster than the darkness
Fell upon that mid-December sun
As they stumbled up the stairs to his apartment
Between the lustful kisses drenched in rum
Where they spent the night descending in desire
Oblivious of sorrow soon to come
Her touch spread through his bones just like wildfire
Poison words that made him sleep so sound and numb
In the morning he awoke and she was gone
Grey skies hanging over white lies she told
Your eyes never saw the truth about her
Well the dawn turned into day turned into night so long
As he waited for a visit or a call
Tracing every line to find the moment he went wrong
Now he wonders if she ever cared at all
Wonders, “was she ever there at all?”
Grey skies hanging over white lies she told
Your eyes never saw the truth about her
Well he fell for her faster than the darkness
Fell upon that mid December sun
Worst part is he ain’t the only one
Grey skies hanging over white lies she told
Grey skies, white lies
My eyes never saw the truth about her

Whiskey Waltz
03:45
|
|||
With whiskey still hot on my breath
I saw I was the only one left
So I paid my tab and prayed for a cab
But the headlights just stared and sped past
Guess I’ll walk
And the stars, they don’t shine on this street
Where the sinners in hand-me-downs meet
But daylight will freeze the cigarette leaves
Withering on the concrete
Oh, it’s a long walk home
When you’re walking alone
While the one that you love is lying with
Someone you thought you had known
All your life
They say time has the power to heal
Every last pang of anger and sadness you feel
But time cannot hide a stain that has dried
When true colors have been revealed
Oh, it’s a long walk home
When you’re walking alone
While the one that you love is lying with
Someone you thought you had known
All your life
Oh, the one that I love is lying
With someone I thought I had known
All my life
